安政4年（1857年）に
白糠町の石炭岬で発見された
とある石刃（ブレード）によると、
今から1万年～2万年前の
先土器時代から、すでに白糠では
人類が生活していたそうです。

ずいぶん昔から人が住んでいたんですね！
ちなみに石炭岬は、
江戸幕府によって北海道で一番最初に
石炭採掘が
おこなわれた場所なのだそうで。
釧路じゃなくて白糠だったんですね！
これも知らなかった！
縄文時代・続縄文時代に次いで
擦文（さつもん）文化時代が訪れ、
この頃の擦文土器と一緒に
鉄器や漆器も出土するなど、
生活水準も高度だったとのことです。
同時期、さらに北方から
進入してきたオホーツク文化圏も
勢力を拡大していましたが、
坂の上遺跡の発掘で
オホーツク式土器が発掘されていることから、
白糠は両方の文化があったみたいですね。
そして白糠町史・上巻には、
紀元前400年以前のある時期に、
韃靼系タタール人が宗谷海峡を
越えて北海道に入ってきた説を
掲載しています。
タタール人は砂鉄生産の特殊技術
「たたら製法」を
身に着けていたそうで、
白糠町の和天別河口竪穴住居群遺跡から
数点の鉄滓が出土されていることから、
本州より早く、北海道で鉄の製造が
始まっていてもおかしくないのでは、
という説も載っていました。
本州より先に、
氷の大地で芽吹いた炎と鉄の文明。
