白糠の名産品の一つ、ヤナギダコ。
北海道では大ぶりなミズダコも獲れますが、
ヤナギダコは身も皮も
ほどよく締まりがあって、
特に身はギュッとつまったうまみと
ほどよい歯ごたえ、
むっちりとした柔らかさ。
私もすっかり夢中です。
タコ漁といえばタコつぼ…
と思っていましたが、
白糠町では「空釣り縄」という
漁法でヤナギダコを
とっているとのこと。
空釣り縄….こちらに来るまで
知りませんでした！
白糠沖の海底は砂泥のため、
タコつぼを設置すると
沈んでしまいます。
そのため空釣り縄が
生まれたんだそうです。
この「空釣り縄」、
大正時代から100年以上も
受け継がれているんです。
針を結んだ縄を何本も海底に仕掛け、
そこを通るタコが
針に引っかかるという仕組み。
仕掛けは一つひとつ手仕事で作られ、
日々のお手入れ（＝針仕事）も
人の手で行われています。
この日、針仕事の様子を
取材させていただけることになり、
白糠漁業協同組合タコ縄部会
部会長 山田さんのお宅を訪れました。

「特に重要なのは、針先だよね」
と語る山田さん。
針先の角度ひとつで、
ヤナギダコがかかる率が
変わるんだそうです。
山田さんの手元、何気なく
触れているようですが、
実はものすごく繊細なチェックを
しています。
海底を動くヤナギダコが
引っ掛かりやすいよう、
絶妙な匙加減で曲げた針先が
ゆがんでいないか。
岩に触れて針の先端が
丸まっていないか。
仕掛けが受けた繊かな
ダメージも指先で感じ、
あっという間に補修していきます。
その速さは、寄りで撮ると
シャッターが追い付かないほど！
（奥様も速いんです…！）
山田さんご夫婦は1皿
30分程度で終えますが、
素人がやれば1時間以上
かかるとのこと。驚きです！
この針仕事はとても手間がかかり、
天候の影響で漁に出られない日も
作業に追われます。
それでもこの漁法を続けているのは、
「白糠の土地に合っていて、
環境にも無理がかからない
この伝統漁法を守っていきたいから」
と山田さんは語ります。
針をかけるこの
ステンレスのパーツにも、
山田さんのこだわりや
探求心がつまっています。
仕掛けを海に放つとき、
針がスムーズに海に入っていくよう、
このパーツの角度一つひとつに至るまで、
長年の経験を活かして
計算しつくしているんです。

空釣り縄はタコつぼなど
大掛かりな仕掛けと異なり、 小さな浮きと縄と糸という、
少ない材料で作られています。
そのため近年注目を集めている
「海洋プラスチックごみ抑制」
にもつながる
“海洋環境に優しい漁法”
なんです。
ヤナギダコの漁期は
12月上旬～5月上旬。
漁が終わるころ、
タコ縄部会の皆さん総出で
海底のごみ拾いをするなど、
漁師さん自らの手で、
白糠の海を守ってくれています。
また、1.8kg以下の
ヤナギダコは獲らないという
自主規制を設けたり、
ヤナギダコが卵を
産み付けやすい産卵礁を
設置するなど、
積極的な資源保護活動に
取り組んでいます。

資源を未来へつなぎ、
土地の特性に合った漁を継承する。
そんな先進的な取り組みは、
まさに白糠の誇りです。

Traditional fishing methods to keep clean ocean
One of Shiranuka Town's specialties is Yanagidako
(A Species of Octopus that inhabits Japan).
It's a good texture with a tight, nice umami,
I'm completely absorbed in the softness.
Speaking of octopus fishing, octopus pot... And I thought,
but they have caught Yanagidako by fishing method called "Karatsurinawa"
(The style of fishing that has been down from the old days in Shiranuka Town).
I had no knowledge of this style of fishing until I came to Hokkaido.
Because the seabed off the coast of Shiramachi is muddy and has a lot of sand,
it sinks even if the vases（to catch the octopus） are put in.
That's why the style called Karatsurinawa was born.
This "Karatsurinawa" has been held for more than 100 years since the Taisho era.
It has been passed down to fishermens in this town.
Amazing!
A number of ropes tied with needles were set up on the seabed,
The mechanism that the octopus which passes there is caught in the needle.
The gimmicks are made by hand one by one,
Daily care is also done by human hands.
One day, I visited the house of Mr. Akira Yamada, a fisherman,
who serves as the chairman of the Takonawa Subcommittee of
Shiranuka Town fisheries cooperative
to cover the restoration of the mechanism used by this fishing method.
"The most important thing is the needle tip."
Mr. Yamada says.
It is said that the rate at which Yanagidako can be caught changes
by a little angle at the tip of the needle.
On the day, I visited Mr. Yamada's house,
chairman of the Takonawa Subcommittee of Shiranuka town fishery cooperative.
This is to cover the care of the gimmickused by this fishing method.
「The most important thing is the tip of the needles.」
Mr. Yamada says.
It is said that the rate at which Yanagidako can be caught
changes at a slight angle at the tip of the needle.
Mr. Yamada seems to be moving his hands casually,
but in fact he is doing a very delicate check.
He feel the fine damage that the mechanism received with the fingertip,
and repair it in no time.
The speed is so fast that the shutter can't keep up
when I take a picture with a closer!
(His wife is also fast. too..!)
Mr. Yamada and his wife finish this work
in about 30 minutes per dish,
but it takes more than an hour if an amateur does it.
Mr. Yamada's commitment is also in this stainless steel part .
When the fishing mechanism is released into the sea,
the needle begins to start with the thread, it enters the sea smoothly.
He calculates every single angle of the part.
(This part is a special order from a contractor in the town.
Karatsurinawa is unlike a large-scale mechanism,
a small float, a little rope, and a mini thread,
It's made of less material.
It is in other words, it has attracted attention in recent years.
"Marine Plastic Waste Control"
It is a fishing method that is friendly to the marine environment.
The fishing season of Yanagidako is from early December to early May.
At the end of fishing, the Takonawa subcommittee's members, all of them, are picking up the seabed of garbage, and Shiranuka town fishermen are protecting the ocean
with their own.
They are also actively involved in resource conservation activities,
such as establishing self-regulations on octopus fishing
(Don't catch Yanagidako under 1.5 kg)
and setting up spawning reefs where Yanagidako is easy to lay eggs.
While protecting the marine environment,
we will connect resources to the future,
Inherit fishing that matches the characteristics of the land.
Shiranuka Town's advanced efforts by fishermen are
proud of our town.
